PRESIDENT'S BIOGRAPHY
Michael Smertiuk
In January 2008, Michael was appointed to the New York City Police Department and has served 32nd Precinct, 70th Precinct, World Trade Center Command, and is currently assigned to the Chief of Department’s Office.
With his constant persistence and dedication, Micharl was recognized and promoted to Detective Investigator by Police Commissioner William J. Bratton in January 2017 and in April 2022 was promoted to Detective 2nd Grade by Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell.
Michael became the GOAL New York President in January 2026, but his steadfast commitment to the organization began in 2016 as GOAL’s Treasurer. Since that time, Michael has also served the group as GOAL’s vice president.
Michael’s key agenda items for his presidency are to maintain ties with LGBTQIA+ advocacy and support groups. Additionally, he aims to modernize the organization's by-laws and recruit participation in the next generation of LGBTQIA+ law enforcement professionals.
As President of the Gay Officers Action League, Michael will strive to listen to GOAL’s membership and the LGBtQIA+ community to address issues, and serve with pride.
