Statement on the Attack in Midtown Manhattan

Dear Members and Friends,

Once again we find ourselves overcome with grief and searching for answers. Monday's murderous rampage in Midtown has left us heartbroken, angry, and deeply shaken.

Although Police Officer Didarul Islam was not the intended target, the killer made a deliberate choice to murder a police officer before continuing his trail of destruction. Police Officer Didarul Islam was killed in cold blood by a coward.

Let us be clear: while it is our duty to investigate and determine motive, there is absolutely no justification for this violence. None. To treat a motive as an excuse is to dishonor the victims, especially our brother Officer Islam, and to minimize the suffering and the anguish of their families and loved ones.

Many of you have reached out in the recent days. I know there are several of you that are suffering, that are hurting. We must be here for one another. I also know that there are at least a few members that knew Police Officers Islam personally --please keep them in your thoughts.

If you need support, please don't hesitate to reach out. There are resources available, and if you're unsure where to turn, contact any board member or anyone in the leadership. We are here for you--whether you knew Officer Islam personally, were shaken by this tragedy, or responded to the scene.

I urge all of you to keep Police Officer Islam, his wife, his children, and all who loved him  in your hearts. When the opportunity arises, we will share details for those wishing to make a financial contribution .

Finally, remain vigilant--on duty and off. Whether you're on patrol, assigned to summer crime reduction, working a detail, or serving in the detective squad, your safety matters.

Let's honor Officer Islam's sacrifice by continuing his watch. We owe him that.

Never Forget.

Fraternally,

Brian E. Downey

President
